The word “art” is something the West has never understood. Art is supposed to be a part of a community. Like, scholars are supposed to be a part of a community… Art is to decorate people’s houses, their skin, their clothes, to make them expand their minds, and it’s supposed to be right in the community, where they can have it when they want it… It’s supposed to be as essential as a grocery store… that’s the only way art can function naturally.

I don’t think Art is something the West never understood. The West has the “privileged” position of intellectualizing their art because it does not need to be inherently functional. Communities in which resources are not as plentiful incorporate art into their process and it becomes utilitarian. Its just a different point of view.

The slow-motion disaster of the food crisis in the Horn of Africa is truly horrifying. Last Wednesday the United Nations declared a famine in two large regions of Somalia; 3.7 million people, nearly half the country’s population, are affected. The crisis is larger than just Somalia. Right now the devastating drought in the region means that more than 11 million people need food aid across Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. You can help by making a contribution through the Tumblr Dashboard or on the Somalia tag page, and we’ll match your support up to $10,000. Proceeds will go to the United Nations World Food Programme.

Astronauts are the poster children for advanced sustainability and recycling. Nothing fazes them.
Mary Roach’s Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void brims with divine details about space borscht, flying chimps, and why you’d probably suck as a astronaut. Read my interview on HuffPo with the funniest science writer around.
